"'This Godless Endeavor' by Nevermore"
by
Bill Vogel III

July 29, 2005 A.D.

Being biggest Power Metal dog on the block is no easy feat, but Nevermore bears the burden well. Their 2005 opus, "This Godless Endeavor" [Century Media Records], does not fail to amaze. Its sound is epic, melodic, and tenebrous as the Raven....

Warrel Dane's vocals alternate between a clean yell and a howl. Rhythms are loose, thundering assaults. Both acoustic and electric guitars snarl brilliantly here. Nevermore is bleak, bruising, and beautiful.

Notable cuts include "Bittersweet Feast," the thrashing "Born (The Retribution Of Spiritual Sickness)," "The Psalm Of Lydia," and the stark title-track. Nevermore defines the sound of the Power Metal genre.

In conclusion, Nevermore has created another instant classic. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'Nihilist (Demos)' by Nihilist"
by
Bill Vogel III

July 29, 2005 A.D.

One listen, and any true Death Metal acolyte can hear the first epic breaths of Entombed in this early incarnation known as Nihilist. The much sought after Nihilist demos have now been collected into one package, the 2005 self-titled disc [Threeman/Candlelight Records]. And it is an inferno of Grind/Deathrock Metal fury.

This chronological collection assembles the "Premature Autopsy," "Only Shreds Remain," "Drowned." and "The Drowned Sessions" demos. And, the last three tracks are taken from the Entombed demo "But Life Goes On." These tracks have a totally raw production quality. So don't expect TOO much. But for the purest this will be a plus.

Nihilist smashes together Grindcore, Deathrock, and Swedish Death Thrash into a cataclysmic wonder of crushing glory. Harsh and acidic, Nihilist is as efficient as a knife wound-no frills, all kills. Frenzied rhythms, caustic growls, and massive guitar blasts stitch together these groove bleeding funeral marches.

The best of these vicious works includes "Supposed To Rot," the thundering "But Life Goes On," "Radiation Sickness" (Repulsion cover), the fiery "Revel In Flesh," and "The Truth Beyond." Nihilist is monumental.

Overall, Nihilist is far more than just a historical footnote to the Death Metal scene. They are the bloody epic that will remain timeless. Stay savage. Farewell.
