"'Kraft' by Vreid"
by
Bill Vogel III

April 7, 2005 A.D.

Everything is eventual. Sooner or later, a band would successfully combine the very best elements of the Northern/Scandinavian Extreme Metal genres into a coherent style. Vreid has done just that.

Their 2005 opus of odes to the grim, "Kraft" [Candlelight Records], is an esoteric blend of Swedish Death, Dark Metal, and Melodic Black Metal. It's a set of contrasts-harsh and melodic, frenzied and bleak, et al. Vreid is equally stark and sublime.

Shrieks and clean vocals are implemented. Vreid has an avant-garde edge unifies the work, from the relentless fury of "Wrath Of Mine" to the tenebrous acoustical cut "Empty." Other noteworthy tracks include "Helvete," "Eldast, Utan Å Gro," and "Songen Åt Fangen."

Vreid uses keyboards, and some acoustic elements. But it's always powerful, and never boring....

In conclusion, Vreid is both eclectic and intense. They'll make an excellent addition to any Extreme Metal collection. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'Souls To Deny' by Suffocation"
by
Bill Vogel III

April 7, 2005 A.D.

Sometimes that New York attitude can payoff. Such is the case with the Death Metal band Suffocation. Their unique style and relentless has made them legends in the genre. And that reputation is very well-deserved.

Their 2004 opus, "Souls To Deny" [Relapse Records], is a blistering testimony to their talents. Suffocation has a dense, primal sound. Fast and catchy, it adds Hardcore stomp to the Death Metal brutality. Brutal growls, blast-beats, and intricate guitar solos add to the visceral edge.

The best of these beasts includes the furious intensity of "Immortally Condemned," "Tomes Of Acrimony," "Souls To Deny," the powerful brutality of "To Weep Once More," and "Surgery Of Impalement." Suffocation is New York Style Death Metal that is monstrously brilliant.

Overall, Suffocation still has the goods. This one is guaranteed to become a classic. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'The Slow Decay' by Jumbo's Killcrane"
by
Bill Vogel III

Wednesday, April 06, 2005 A.D.

Grindcore, it makes the blood sing and the bones shatter. The Grind Metal act Jumbo's Killcrane is one such beautiful monstrosity. Their 2005 release, "The Slow Decay" [Crucial Blast Records], is a massive abyss of thunderous glory. This is Psychedelic Doomgrind for Generation Wrecked....

Jumbo's Killcrane has a crushing sound, an obliterating mixture of Powergrind and Psychedelic Doom Metal. Shrill, growled vocals impale the creeping blast of guitar roar. The rhythms are loose, slow, and utterly primal. Jumbo's Killcrane kills.

The best cuts include the crawling maelstrom of "Locust Blanket," "Die, Stabbed," and the abyssal "The Slow Decay."
Jumbo's Killcrane is brutality unleashed.

In summary, Jumbo's Killcrane is as bleak and beautiful as a solar eclipse that just won't end. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'Apocalyptic End In White' by Imperial Crystalline Entombment"
by
Bill Vogel III

April 6, 2005 A.D.

In the darkest depths of the abyss, only the fiercest survive. Imperial Crystalline Entombment (a.k.a. I.C.E.) does more than survive in the utter bleakness, they thrive on the fury. Harsh, dismal, and intense: Imperial Crystalline Entombment makes Blackened Swedish Death Metal for only the most severe conditions....

Their 2004 opus of grim glories, "Apocalyptic End In White" [Crash Music, Inc.], is a cold, powerful work of sheer rage. Raspy, shrieking growls drill through the tumult. Furious, relentless guitars collide with riotous rhythms into a hellish symphony of twisted wonders. Imperial Crystalline Entombment has a abysmal beauty.

The bloodiest cuts include the ravenous onslaught of "Glacial Lyckanthropic Horde," "Convulsing Frigid Death," the attrition of "Onward Banshee Legions," and "Astral Frost Invocation." Imperial Crystalline Entombment is maliciously cool.

Overall, Imperial Crystalline Entombment is intense, raw-edged, and killer. Get ready for the apocalypse. Stay savage. Farewell.
