"'Lyssa - Rural Gods And Astonishing Punishments' by Nightfall"

Brutal and resplendent, Nightfall masterfully creates music that shines like the abyss. The Greek outfit's 2005 opus, "Lyssa - Rural Gods And Astonishing Punishments" [Black Lotus/The End Records], is a melodious epic of Dark Doomdeath Metal brilliance. This is one of the best releases of the year.

From the radiant depths, Nightfall fuses tenebrous power with sheer melancholy. Massive blasts of ominous guitars roar over crushing rhythms and keyboards. Bursts of Thrash Metal add some wicked juxtaposition to the bleak intensity. Vicious, growled vocals by Efthimis Karadimas crown this furious glory.

Songs of exceptional note include the powerful "Dark Red Skies," "The Perfect Li(f)e," the abyss harshness of "One Of These Days," "Swollen," and "So(u)l Invictus." Nightfall is stunning, serene, and severe all at the same instant.

In summary, Nightfall is abysmally perfect. Are you happy now? Don't be.... Stay savage. Farewell.

"'Hate Dominate Congregate Eliminate' by Project Hate MCMXCIX"
by
Bill Vogel III

March 3, 2005 A.D.

More often than not, life can be a real kick in the face. Ever wanted a soundtrack for those times when you're melancholy and aggressive? Then the 2004 Project Hate MCMXCIX CD, titled "Hate Dominate Congregate Eliminate" [Threeman/Candlelight Records], should put the roar in your anger.

The Project Hate MCMXCIX is the killer side project band of Tomas Skogsberg [Entombed], and their style takes visceral Gothic/Melodic Death Metal and adds elements of Black Metal. The sound is visceral-deep growls and shrieks drill through heavy Gothic guitar sludge and manic rhythms, which are then backed by powerful, angelic female vocals. The fusion is both beautiful and fierce, blasting a burned wasteland in its sonic wake.

The most ferocious and moody cuts are the ones that work the best. These include the bleak power of "Nailed," "Weep," "Eliminate," the punishing "Hate," and "Burn." But every track has a visceral charm.

(The lyrics may be offensive to certain philosophical groups....)

In conclusion, this Project Hate MCMXCIX release is harshly brilliant and unusual. Add some mean melancholy to your day. Stay savage. Farewell.
