"'Remote' by Gadget"
by
Bill Vogel III

September 3, 2004 A.D.

Blistering and ferocious, Gadget is one the best of the new breed of Grindcore Metal. Their 2004 opus, "Remote" [Relapse Records], is solid brutality from start to finish. Elements of Grind, Crust, and Death bleed in unifying aggression.

Shrill growls fuse with guttural roared vocals. Crushing grooves permeate the sonic maelstrom, and are not sacrificed for speed. Gadget is pure, beautiful chaos-relentless, primal, and apocalyptic in its glorious savagery.

Feel the angst....

The best of these usually short cuts of furious wonder includes "Wake The Dead," the cataclysmic radiance of "Anew" (my favorite), "Empty Souls," "Connected," the fiery "Unreachable," "Forbrukad," "Remote," and the bruiser "Enigmatic." Gadget kills.

Know the power....

In summary, Gadget is not the average Grind band. They are exceptional, and they obliterate like few others can. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'Subjected' by Illogicist"
by
Bill Vogel III

September 1, 2004 A.D.

There has been some truly amazing acts spring from the radiant abyss of the Melodic Death Metal genre over the past year. One such shining act is Illogicist, whose 2004 opus, called "Subjected" [Crash Music Inc.], is a brilliant display of sublime aggression. Illogicist is a roaring, ripping barrage of intricate, melodious brutality.

With a fusion of melodic skill and sheer, visceral angst, Illogicist burns with a radiant aggression. Illogicist hammers out tight, caustic rhythms crowned by ornate, powerful guitar leads. Frenzied tempos, with some odd-timing, are the foundation for the Illogicist sound. Shrill vocal growls finish the surgical strike. Illogicist is brilliantly twisted.

The best cuts include "Dissonant Perspectives," the wickedly wrenched onslaught of "Every Straight Lie," "Subjected," the instrumental "Introspection," "The High Price Of Confidence," and "Knowledge Curse." Illogicist is avant-garde, and aggressive.

In summary, Illogicist is a very talented Melodic Death Metal band with a unique and intricate style. They'll make an excellent addition to any Death Metal creature's collection. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'Best Of' by Malevolent Creation"
by
Bill Vogel III

September 2, 2004 A.D.

2004 has been an exemplary year for reissues and compilations. Another excellent addition to this list is Malevolent Creation's latest, "Best Of Malevolent Creation" [Roadrunner Records]. This is Florida Death Metal at its bloodiest best-fast, disjointed, and fierce.

Malevolent Creation has a disfiguring glory that combines sharp, growled vocals with hyper guitar blasts, twisted rhythms, and mangled grooves that are catastrophically cool. It's addictive and aggressive, writhing in beautiful brutality. This is classic-kill....

The best of these visceral wonders includes "Slaughter Of Innocence," the fiery cut "Iced," the relentless intensity of "Monster," "The Coldest Survive," "Decadence Within," "Piece By Piece," and the raw charm of "The Way Of All Flesh." Malevolent Creation is intensity unleashed.

Overall, even after all these years Malevolent Creation is still stunning. Get vicious with this slab of pure power. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'A Brand New Subdivision' by Halfwayhome"
by
Bill Vogel III

August 31, 2004 A.D.

Emo has a rough magic all-its-own. Halfwayhome combines the best elements of Emocore with dark, poetic lyrics and an ample amount of hook. Their 2004 opus, "A Brand New Subdivision" [Death Scene Records], is the best work offered from this genre in ages. This is Halfwayhome's best one yet.

Their style fuses Hardcore edge with melodic, Pop aesthetics and a melancholic poetry ala Edgar Allan Poe. It's Punk energy hardwired to tenebrous beauty-it's a frenetic intensity sublime. Clean vocals, frenzied rhythms bleeding groove, and kinetic guitars mix fluidly with acoustic (e.g. piano, etc.) and Industrial samples. Halfwayhome is tremendously cool.

The best of these bruising beauties includes the addictive stomp of "The Truth Can Be A Brutal Business," "On The Passing Of Fairytale Heroes," the snap of "Ascension To Clarity," "Contract With A Ghost," "For Tomorrow We Die," and the chunky crunch of "Ignited Eyes And Cyanide." Halfwayhome is the Best Emocore band of 2004.

Overall, Halfwayhome is incredible. They have brought spark back to a dying Emo scene. Halfwayhome is all-the-way cool. Stay savage. Farewell.
