“’Choice Cuts’ by Carcass” by Bill Vogel III
Friday, August 27, 2004 A.D.
One could blather on endlessly about the greatness of the legendary Carcass. And rightly so, because besides being one of the greatest Grindcore bands ever they evolved into one of the best Deathrock Metal acts before their untimely demise in 1997. The British act’s 2004 compilation of rarities and glories, titled “Choice Cuts” [Earache Records], is a glistening blade slathered in blood. It covers the span of their career, and is easily one of the BEST of 2004.
Shrill, powerful growls cut through the massive roar of guitars and intricate rhythms. Carcass is brutal yet melodic, with catchy hooks and crushing intensity. Lyrically, they read intelligent and poetic. (Think Poe meets a medical school book on dissection.)
Carcass is one of a kind.
Assembling both of the lusted after Peel Session recordings, along with a range of classic cuts, this disc shines with musical brilliance. The best tracks include “Buried Dreams,” the epic “No Love Lost,” the intricate aggression of “Heartwork,” the Grind slab “Incarnated Solvent Abuse,” “Corporal Jigsore Quandary,” “This Is Your Life,” “Reek of Putrefaction” (BBC Radio One Peel Session 01-02-1989), and wrecked resplendence of “Exhume To Consume” (BBC Radio One Peel Session 12-16-1990). Every track kills though.
Carcass is brutal and brilliant—a beautiful, gory perfection with few equals.
In summary, Carcass has released a masterpiece from beyond the grave. Few have done that. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'The Impossibility Of Reason' by Chimaira" by Bill Vogel III
August 27, 2004 A.D.
At last, the ferocious Chimaira has returned. Their 2003 sophomore effort, "The Impossibility Of Reason" [Roadrunner Records], is a stunning masterpiece of uninhibited brutality. Chimaira takes it to the limit, and beyond.
Welding together a jagged, volatile mixture of Dark Aggro and Death Metal, Chimaira has created a style of massive, menacing beauty. Acidic, growled vocals burn through the blasting roar of kinetic guitars. It's catchy and harsh while bleeding a crawling darkness-the best of all worlds.
The best of these killer cuts includes the bipolar "Down Again," the intense "Crawl," the slithering rage of "Power Trip," "Implements Of Destruction," "Stigmurder," the fiery "The Impossibility Of Reason," and "Pure Hatred." Chimaira is brutality at its best.
An import version includes these killer extra cuts: "Army Of Me (Bonus Track)," "Indifferent To Suffering," "Without Moral Restraint," "Fascination Street," "Let Go (Demo)," "Pass Out Of Existence (Demo)," "Severed (Demo)," "Dead Inside (Demo)," "Power Trip (Live)," and "Cleansation (Live)."
Overall, Chimaira has surpassed their previous, excellent release with "The Impossibility Of Reason." This one is a winner, reason or not. Stay savage. Farewell.

“’Cruelty Beyond Submission’ by Pyrexia” by Bill Vogel III
August 24, 2004 A.D.
Spawned from the Northeastern waste of post-industrial ruin, Pyrexia was one of the creators (along with Suffocation) of the New York Death Metal style. Their 2004 opus, “Cruelty Beyond Submission” [Crash Music Inc./Rex Records], is a shattering display of violent brilliance. Pyrexia is a mainstay, a square-meal of raw, excellent brutality that shouldn’t be missed.
Extreme, harsh rhythms with a tight assault pattern skeletonize guttural, powerful growls and a dense, sharp hook. Intricate leads crown the roar, and some samples are used as intros. They also incorporate flashes of Grindcore into the mix. Pyrexia is crushing as well as memorable.
Best cuts include the fiery short “No Apologies,” the Grind explosiveness of “Life Long Hate,” “Closure,” “Bludgeoned By Deformity,” and the corrosive glory of “Resurrection.” Pyrexia simply kills....
In summary, Pyrexia is as definite, superbly brutal as one expects. Their reputation is well deserved. “Cruelty Beyond Submission” is a murderous classic. Stay savage. Farewell.
