"'Brutality Is Law' by Severed Savior" by Bill Vogel III
Friday, March 26, 2004 A.D.
Severed Savior is a unique rarity-a Brutal Death Metal act with a gargantuan range of influences. Their brilliant 2003 opus, "Brutality Is Law" [Unique Leader Records], is a solid mixture of pure aggression and epic skill. Crushing and haunting, Severed Savior is intricately powerful.
Guttural vocals impale massive, bloody grooves. The rhythms are super tight, and crazy as Hell. The lead guitars are highly skilled, ornate slashes with a strongly melodic quality. The Severed Savior sound has elements of Grind as well as Melodic Death Metal within its harsh, pristine design.
The best of these eviscerating cuts includes "Buried Again," the extreme hostility of "Blessed By The Beast," "Public Mutilation," and the primal "Brutality Is Law."
There is also the amazing song, "Death Is Just The Beginning (R.I.P. Rob "So Vile" Lumbre)." It's a dark, very melodic instrumental. Severed Savior is the total package of brutality-fierce, dynamic, and elaborate.
In summary, Severed Savior is Brutal Death Metal with a fiery, ornate edge. This one is a real horror show of greatness. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'NYHC' EP by Madball" by Bill Vogel III
March 26, 2004 A.D.
When it comes to Hardcore, one band with a well-deserved reputation is Madball. Their 2004 EP, "NYHC" [Thorp Records], is a 4 song onslaught of perfect fury. This is Madball at their best and brashest.
Inspired by his brother's band, Agnostic Front, Freddy Cricien formed Madball in 1988. And now 16 years later, Madball is as powerful and energetic as ever. This is as true as Hardcore gets....
Freddy Cricien's are aggressive, perfectly executed assaults of caustic force. Mitts' guitars are pristine yet primal. The rhythms hammered-out by Hoya Roc and Rigg Ross grab you by the guts, and destroy. Madball does it with severe style.
The best cuts are the wild stomp of "My Rage," the punch of "Para Mi Gente" (sung entirely in Spanish), and "For My Enemies." Every song kills though.
This one comes with DVD extras as well.
Overall, Madball is still the vicious wonder. If you buy only one Hardcore release this year, it should be this one. Madball is N.Y. Hardcore at its finest. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'Witch Hunt' by SPF1000" by Bill Vogel III
March 25, 2004 A.D.
Gothic Industrial Metal is a smaller scene than what it used to be. The most notable acts of this genre including Jack Off Jill, Sisters Of Mercy, Marilyn Manson, and Godhead. But SPF1000 is another band of excellent merit. Their 2003 opus, "Witch Hunt" [Dark Future Music], is not brutal but has a dark edge that works well.
The SPF1000 sound is heavy both on electronica and melancholy-think Godhead meets Marilyn Manson. It's stark, heavy, and a little bit weird (in a good way). Clean, depressed vocals wash across tenebrous keyboards and stone cold rhythms. The guitars add some nice, jagged hook as well.
The best of these dreadful gems includes the up-tempo rant "Horror Show," "Haunted House," the surreal and sublime gloom of "Death For The Dead," and "Perfect Victim." SPF1000 is eerily cool....
Overall, SPF1000 is a good band. It's nice to hear some killer Gothic Industrial Metal again. Stay savage. Farewell.
