"'Quaerite Lux In Tenebris (Exploring The External Worlds)' by Rossomahaar" by Bill Vogel III
Friday, October 24, 2003 A.D.
Black Metal is not a Scandinavian monopoly. One of the world's best Black Metal bands is from Russia. That band is the vicious Rossomahaar. Their 2003 opus, "Quaerite Lux In Tenebris (Exploring The External Worlds)" [Xtreem Music], is Poetic/Epic Black Metal at its greatest. This is melodic, sublime darkness surpassed by none.
Sharp, acidic shrieks slice through walls of masterfully executed guitar roar. Rhythms are tight, extreme barrages of fiery malevolence. Rossomahaar uses symphonic elements skillfully, without dulling their ferocity. (It enhances their edge, making it even more jagged and primal.)
Another outstanding quality of the Rossomahaar onslaught is the lyrics. Tenebrous and truly poetic, they avoid the Black Metal clichés. Rossomahaar creates a unique form of aggression.
Songs of exceptional note include "Quaerite Lux In Tenebris (Exploring The External Worlds)," "Me, The Misanthrope," the blistering "Crescent Moon (The Final Celebration)," "Those Spectres Within (Eternal Is The Nothingness I've Emerged From)," and the spectacular and melodious "The Moon, The Sun, The Stars."
In conclusion, Rossomahaar has made the BEST BLACK METAL opus of 2003. Few others can compare. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'The Beyond' by Cult Of Luna" by Bill Vogel III
October 22, 2003 A.D.
Cult Of Luna, Sweden's own sons of Epic/Dark Death Metal, have created a masterpiece. Their 2003 opus, "The Beyond" [Earache Records], is a coup de grace shotgun-blast to the face of mediocrity. Their sound is cavernous-a massive, powerful force of sublime violence.
Unlike most of the other bands from this region, Cult Of Luna avoids the trappings of Swedish Death Metal. They've forged their own unique style. Solid, deep growls burn through dense, slow guitar roar. Symphonic samples add a huge, tenebrous atmosphere.
Songs of exceptional brilliance include the expansive "Circle," "Further," the abysmal glory of "The Watchtower," and "Arrival." Cult Of Luna has a genius all their own.
In final analysis, Cult Of Luna masterfully creates Epic/Dark Death Metal that is awe-inspiring and intense. This one obliterates.... Stay savage. Farewell.
