"'Killing Season' by Immersed In Blood"
by
Bill Vogel III

September 19, 2003 A.D.

From the gory guts of it, Immersed In Blood plays Brutal Sludge/Death Metal that pulverizes your soul. Their 2003 opus, "Killing Season" [Arctic Music Group], is a stark display of harsh, jagged beauty sharpened by sheer, chaotic intensity. Immersed In Blood is severe, bleak, and powerful.

Innards crushing, sludgy guitar blasts burn-away massive, tumultuous rhythms. Guttural, growled vocals crown this sonic mayhem perfectly, like being wrapped in razor-wire. Immersed In Blood is as brutal as they come. And it is very good.

Songs of note within this raging collection of eviscerating cuts include "Azura," the smashed glory of "Percussive Control," "Letum Non Omnia Finit," "We Have A Bleeder," and the primal fire of "Killing Season." Immersed In Blood is industrial-strength Death Metal....

In conclusion, Immersed In Blood truly obliterates. This one will make the trendwhores runaway screaming and bleeding. (The thought of it makes me smile.) Stay savage. Farewell.

"'The Love Of Life' by Watashi Wa"
by
Bill Vogel III

September 19, 2003 A.D.

In the continuing procession of Pop Punk bands, a new one that will please fans of the genre is Watashi Wa. Their 2003 opus, "The Love Of Life" [Tooth & Nail Records], has an aesthetic quality that is unique yet appealing. Fusing Melodic Pop Punk, some light Industrial, and a little Hardcore rumble, Watashi Wa has a solid sound.

Clean vocals are the order of the day here, with just a slight whine to them. Mid-paced tempos and guitar hook are the foundation of the Watashi Wa sound, with positive lyrical outlook. Samples are interlaced into the mix. It's a melodious concoction that works well.

The best of these cuts include "Clear," "Everything" with its surreal feel, "Air I Breathe," and the speedy stomp of "At Its Finest" (the best track). Watashi Wa has a mellow style, but it is good nonetheless.

In conclusion, Watashi Wa has good release in "The Love Of Life." Pop Punk fans will be well pleased with this one. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'Posthuman' by Void"
by
Bill Vogel III

September 18, 2003 A.D.

Beneath a dark Northern sky, in the dead light of stars grown cold within the fathomless depths, an extreme thought strain was born. This brutal concept of Void was designed with the black perfection. Sublime and extreme, this band creates a unique style of Dark Industrial/Swedish Death Metal with Black Metal elements.

Their brilliantly dark 2003 opus, "Posthuman" [Lumber Jack/Candlelight/Nocturnal Art Productions], is as addictive as it is aggressive. Mixing surreal Industrial nuances and samples with harsh, Extreme Metal ferocity, Void masterfully constructs music that is eerie and intense. Shrill growls hammer through fiery guitar blasts as the technological waves shine, adding a creepy atmosphere.

The best of these bloody, razor-sharp cuts include "Future Horror Aura," "Syndrome," the crawling brutality of "Sulphur City Sickness," and "Cypher." Void is amazing-both severe and sublime, ethereal and raw. This is a stark, enigmatic journey of extreme, Cyber Darkness....

In summary, Void is simply amazing. "Posthuman" is a monumental opus that will stand the tests of time. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'As The Last Light Drains' by Freya"
by
Bill Vogel III

September 17, 2003 A.D.

Rising from the ashes of the legendary Metalcore act Earth Crisis, Freya has similar feel with a few added, subtle twists of aggression. Their 2003 debut, "As The Last Light Drains" [Victory Records], is an intensely ferocious journey through stark landscapes of harsh, cataclysmic beauty. Freya burns down the palisades of mediocrity.

The guitar work is a tight, metallic onslaught with a monstrous Hardcore edge. Guttural growls, shrieks, roaring yells, and clean Emo vocals wrap the skull-crushing rhythms and fiery guitar blasts. There is a strong, brutal core to the Freya sound that is perfectly balanced by artistic skill. It's this juxtaposition of dynamics that separates the great Metalcore bands from the merely good ones.

Freya is definitely great.

The best of these shredding cuts includes the perfect ferocity of "Daisy Cutter," the instrumental "Veritas," "Negative Infinity," "Glasseating Smile," the feral sublimity of "Dead In Her Eyes," and the straight-edge anthem "Seize The Day." Freya is explosive....

In final summary, Freya has a masterpiece in their debut release, "As The Last Light Drains." It is easily one of the best releases of the year. Could they achieve the legendary status of Earth Crisis? Absolutely. Stay savage. Farewell.
