"'Leave A Whisper' by Shinedown" by Bill Vogel III
September 4, 2003 A.D.
Jacksonville, Florida band Shinedown have released an excellent debut. Their 2003 opus, "Leave A Whisper" [Atlantic Records], is a superior example of brilliantly executed Modern/Melodic Metal.
Implementing a solid, addictive sound with equal parts grit and sublimity, Shinedown has an Alternative/Melodic Moodcore style. Clean, powerful vocals with a Progressive tinge are the norm (a few guttural yells are used on occasion for additional impact). The guitars are dense and chunky, with a strong, melodic quality and great leads. The rhythms are loose, and dripping tons of hook.
The best of these excellent cuts include the radio-hit "Fly From The Inside," "In Memory," "Crying Out," the emotional "No More Love," "Better Version," and heart-wrenching anger of the powerful "Stranger Inside" (my favorite track). Shinedown plays their anger well.
In summary, Shinedown is an excellent new act Alternative/Melodic Moodcore brilliance. This style ain't dead yet, and Shinedown makes it worthy of one last chance. Stay savage. Farewell.
