"'Depopulate' by Vile"
by
Bill Vogel III
January 9, 2003 A.D.
From the fierce and the furious.... The masters of Grind/Brutal Death Metal VILE have risen from the abyss to spew forth more utter, sublime chaos. Their latest, "Depopulate" [Crash Inc./Unique Leader Records], is a molten cataclysm of harsh, brilliant primalism.
Vile's sound is a fiery spate of elements-raw, growled vocals, blinding rhythms, discordant guitar blasts highlighted by intricate solos, and crushing tempos. This Bay Area act shows glimmers of its scene influences. And for Vile, all of these characteristics add an extra jagged edginess to already fierce quality.
The best tracks include "Bitterness," "Eat The Rude," the shredding roar of "Butchered," "Path To Incineration," and the title-track. Vile has a nihilistic glory all its own.
Overall, Vile is amazing. This one is for the most brutal of Death Metal freaks. Stay savage. Farewell.

??Cain?s Way? by Hate?
by
Bill Vogel III
January 8, 2003 A.D.
The ferocious Hate has returned.... Their latest abysmal wonder,
titled ?Cain?s Way? [World War III Records], is as brutal as it is
beautiful. Hate pushes the limits of modern Death Metal to the
extremities.
With their teeth snarling, Hate welds together elements of Black
Metal, Death Thrash, and Brutal Death Metal into an apocalyptic
dirge. Frenzied riffs, vicious rhythms, and fierce growled vocals
fuse with brutal guitar blasts. The result is both cataclysmic and
brilliant in its ferocious radiance.
Songs of killer noteworthiness include the furious assault of
?Through Hate To Eternity,? the short instrumental intro
?Apocalypse,? ?Future Is Mayhem,? ?...And The Sin Becomes,? and the
surreal instrumental outro ?From Cain To Cadmon.? Hate unleashes
some serious chaos....
Overall, Hate has created another excellent opus of Brutal Death
Metal. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'The Cheesestake Years' by Rancid Vat"
by
Bill Vogel III
January 5, 2003 A.D.
Well, the former Philadelphia (now Austin, Texas) based Punk band Rancid Vat has slithered-out another great slab of East Coast influenced Punk. Titled "The Cheesestake Years" [Steel Cage Records], it's a collection of rare, vinyl-only, and signature tracks.
Rancid Vat makes rowdy, raunchy Punk-big, heavy guitar riffs rumble across a gravelly vocal yell, coarse rhythms, and odd, avant-garde instruments such as theramin, clavinet, tenor sax, etc. It's basic but brilliant. Rancid Vat avoids the trends....
This opus spans the 21 plus years existence of the band. The best cuts include the raucous stomp of "The Darkest Souls In Rock & Roll" (which was featured in the vampire movie "Cold Hearts"), "Sucker Punch," "Testify," "Mummer Massacre," and "Rock & Roll Fraud/Bruiser Brody." Rancid Vat uses humor, horror, and heaviness to hammer-out their Punk attitude.
Overall, Rancid Vat is a brutal boogie sensation that'll appeal to old school/indie Punk fans. This one has got some swagger and stomp to it. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'Euphoric Discordance' by Grotesqueuphoria"
by
Bill Vogel III
January 7, 2003 A.D.
Grotesqueuphoria, a new Death Metal band featuring former members of Butchery and Exuviate, has released their debut on Spinebuster Records. Titled "Euphoric Discordance," it is Brutal Death Metal with flashes of Grindcore ferocity. And it obliterates....
The Grotesqueuphoria sound is basic and brutal-rhythms are tight, the guitars are precise with a Florida Style Death Metal inflections, and the vocals are a mid-range rumbling growl. Elements of Thrash and Grind sharpen the edge, while short, surreal guitar solos add a nice, deranged slant. There's a definite Suffocation/Monstrosity vibe to the Grotesqueuphoria assault tactic, but it works extremely well.
The best tracks from this opus include "Dead," the malevolent barrage of "Sadistic Symphony," "Shadow Of The Dwell," and "Grotesque Mutation." It's relentless, vicious, and frenzied in its gruesome glory.
In summary, Grotesqueuphoria has a crushing style that makes them a welcome addition to the madhouse. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'DikNity' by Slick Idiot"
by
Bill Vogel III
January 4, 2003 A.D.
Remember the legendary German Industrial Metal band KMFDM? Well, the new act Slick Idiot is one of the offshoots of that band (another being Skold). Slick Idiot's debut, titled "DikNity" [Cleopatra Records], has a very similar feel to KMFDM.
Beats, samples, and guitar rumble mix into a heavy, and danceable, melee of sound. The vocals are clean, but slightly distorted, with a rhythmic cadence. It's a little mellow, but still very good.
Songs of note include "Xcess," "Lazy," the rapid kick of "It Won't Do," "Blast," and "Idiot." Slick Idiot is Punk aggression fused with Industrial precision. It's chaotic, technical, and sublime.
Overall, Slick Idiot is a surgical strike of Techno/Industrial madness well worth the price of a listen. Stay savage. Farewell.
