"'End Transmission' by Snapcase"
by
Bill Vogel III

November 6, 2002 A.D.

Straight-Edge giants Snapcase have returned with a new opus, titled "End Transmission" [Victory Records]. It's a punishing display of mid-range Hardcore aggression. Snapcase pushes an explosive dynamic to a caustic flashpoint.

Pummeling guitars fuel the Snapcase momentum, charging the sound forward. The vocals are a clean, mid-range yell that meshes beautifully with the instrumental vigor. It's a process that works very, very well.

Best tracks include the volatile "Coagulate," "Believe, Revolt," "Litmus Test," "A Synthesis of Classic Forms," and "Aperture." Snapcase makes no bones about their beliefs-they live it as they speak it.

Overall, Snapcase has done it again. It's just one more great moment in Hardcore aggression. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'Expanding Senses' by Darkane"
by
Bill Vogel III

October 24, 2002 A.D.

From the finest darkness that Northern Europe has to offer comes the ferocious Darkane. Their latest barrage of musical warfare, called "Expanding Senses" [Nuclear Blast Records], is their best to date. It is Melodic Swedish Death Metal insanity unleashed.

They have taken a more melodic approach here, focusing less on speed but digging the hooks in more deeply. The aggression remains intact, while not as tightly wound. Swedish Style vocal growls penetrate waves of razor-sharp, crashing guitars and pummeling rhythms.

...And the rest is violence.

The best cuts include "Fatal Impact," the incendiary "Violence From Within," "Innocence Gone," "Chaos Vs Order," and "The Fear Of One's Self." Darkane is a force of pure artistic destruction.

In summary, Darkane has created yet another masterful work. The skill is gloried in the aggression. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'Will To Mangle' by Sourvein"
by
Bill Vogel III

November 3, 2002 A.D.

Featuring a member from the legendary act Buzz-Oven, the Doom Metal monstrosity known as Sourvein is well on their way to being legendary in their own right. Their new opus, "Will To Mangle" [Southern Lord Records], has a harsh dynamic that heightens the intensity of ordinary Doom. But Sourvein is far beyond ordinary.

The fierce quality that defines the Sourvein essence is a brutal form of Sludge/Doomdeath Metal. It is ferocious-shrill, growled vocals wallowing in a dense, sludgy caterwaul of extremely distorted guitars. In a way it is reminiscent of the mighty Acid Bath. (And that is a great thing.)

Tracks of epic note include "Dirgewine," the punishing cut "Zeropath," "Blackzorlac," and the cataclysmic "Bangleaf." Sourvein could squeeze blood from a stone.

Overall, Sourvein is as brutal as they come. And that is just one facet of what makes them great. The rest is left to the shadows of creation, and its abysmal glory. Stay savage. Farewell.
