"Stone Sour (Self-Titled)"
by
Bill Vogel III

Friday, September 13, 2002 A.D.

From the brilliant soul of Corey Taylor [Slipknot] comes the excellent band Stone Sour. Their self-titled debut [Roadrunner Records] is an amalgamation of seemingly contradicting aspects-harsh, Death Thrash Aggro Metal and soft, melancholic beauty. And they do both brilliantly.

For the most part Stone Sour is an Aggro Metal band tempered with elements of Death Metal and Thrash. Vocals jump from clean to growled in the trademarked Corey Taylor style. The guitars and rhythms are tight, powerful, and fast.

The most incredible cuts include the blistering "Get Inside," "Tumult," "Omega," "Orchids," and the sorrowful ballad "Bother." "Bother" has symphony instrumentation, adding to the dark, melancholic feel of the song. The lyrics state, "Wish I was too dead to care, If indeed I cared at all, Never had a voice to protest, So you gave me shit to digest." It's simultaneously sad, angry, and sublime.

Overall, Stone Sour is an excellent band. And while not being profoundly different than Slipknot, they are still uniquely original in their own right. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'American Steel' by ADZ"
by
Bill Vogel III

September 20, 2002 A.D.

When it comes down to it, straight-ahead Rock is good. ADZ takes that straight-on, Bluesy sound ala Kenny Wayne Shepard and gives it a Punk attitude. Their new album, "American Steel" [Steel Cage Records], is a Hardcore Punk stomp 'n' roll with a sense of humor.

Fast, Blues drenched leads explode within rapid, Punk/Thrash rhythms. The coarse, clean vocals fit the melee well, delivering an often sardonic lyrical wit. It's a careening assault of Blues Punk that is wild, groovy, and just fun.

Some of the best cuts are "Love You Like A Crazy," "Kiss My Fuzzface," "Mama Married A Mau Mau," the stomp of "Black Cat," and the frenzied "Kiss My Fist." ADZ just, simply goes at. And it works for them.

In summary, ADZ are a Bluesy, psycho-circus joyride. And this one band that is good to go. Stay savage. Farewell.

"'Everything I Touch Falls To Pieces' by Dead To Fall"
by
Bill Vogel III

September 20, 2002 A.D.

This is one incredible band. Dead To Fall has a ferocious sound that fuses blunt force elements of Metalcore, Swedish Style Death Metal, and Brutal Deathrock Metal. The Chicago group's 2002 opus, "Everything I Touch Falls To Pieces" [Victory Records], is one of the best of the year.

Centered around a bombastic core of Metalcore ferocity, the edges are sharpened to wicked jags with intricate Swedish Death guitar playing and caustic vocal rampages. Dead To Fall uses a vocal assault that switches from guttural roars to powerful, shrill growls. The rhythms are tight, intense, and catchy...the hooks here could rip stone to pieces.

Dead To Fall has a visceral charm that makes every song monumental. The best cuts include "Graven Image," "The Eternal Gates Of Hell," the cataclysmic beauty and angst of "Memory," "Like A Bullet," and my favorite one, "Tu Se Morta." It's a bleakly glorious wonder.

Overall, Dead To Fall has a triumph of hostile beauty in "Everything I Touch Falls To Pieces." This is one that extinguishes the pale stars with its shining chaos. Stay savage. Farewell.
